Creepy Cloud (And I'm A Nerd)

The instant I laid eyes on this rather odd-looking cloud,

I was reminded of the "salt vampire" from the original Star Trek TV series.  The creature bears the distinction of being the "starring m̶o̶n̶s̶t̶e̶r̶ creature" of the very first regular episode of the series to air, titled "The Man Trap".

It was supposed to be the last of its kind, a race of beings who may have created a civilization on an earthlike planet (fandom opinion seems to be divided between those who hold that these creatures are the actual builders of the civilization and those who counter that these are the predators that killed off the true owners of the civilization), and who are capable of creating illusory images of themselves to seduce the perceiver.  The result is that different crew members of the starship Enterprise see the creature differently -- as either the person they most fondly remember or the one they most naturally expect to see.  Thus, Dr. McCoy sees it as the woman he once had a crush on long ago, and who amazingly "hasn't aged a bit" since then;  Captain Kirk also sees it as that same woman, but a sensibly older version of her, due to the passage of time;  and a crewman (the first to die, natch^) sees it as a sexy blonde he'd met a short time before on shore leave.  The result:  disaster.

The Sun Imperiled

Yet again!  This afternoon, for the nth time a cosmic monster of unknown origin tried to swallow the Sun.  I was able to capture this pivotal moment before it came close to succeeding, only to find out to its chagrin that Sol is just too hot to handle.  Yeah, take that, you nasty monster!

Also, the image reminds me of old-time frescoes somehow
And especially depictions of knights squaring off against dragons
At least the dragon part

Red Monster, Again

Some time ago I passed by the Red Monster in Sinchon.  It had been cordoned off and a man was working on it, cleaning and painting it.  Today I happened to pass by it again, and sure enough, it was all spiffed up and sleek, and on top of it, surprise! -- its mirrored face was now a monitor screen.  I stood in front of it, taking a selfie via the mirror, and another surprise! -- the Red Monster was checking me out with a giant eye even as I was checking it out.

Yet Another Cosmic Monster

laughingly chases a desperately fleeing Sun in the evening sky, doubtless intending to swallow him and cause an eclipse.

I Once Read

in a book whose title I've long since forgotten that old-time lore passed down among lumberjacks in the logging camps of North America included tall tales of a weird creature known, rather literally, as the "Staybehind".  That's exactly what it did -- pick some logger or traveler caught out alone in the woods, get right up behind him and stay with him.  If the unfortunate fellow happened to hear its footsteps or somehow sense it and whirled around to confront it, no matter how fast he turned it was always faster than he was and managed to stay behind him always.  But even though the victim could not see it, he knew the creature was there, he could feel its presence right behind him, and could not escape it no matter how fast he ran.  Naturally, no one could tell you what it actually looked like so there was no visual depiction that I could find.  And I don't remember what else, if anything, the Staybehind did.  Could be, it simply followed a victim around in the woods without actually doing anything else by way of physical harm, but simply aroused fear and anxiety by its very presence.  But on the other hand, perhaps it whispered knowingly in his ear, too, or maybe it touched him softly -- or perhaps not so softly -- in sensitive places, until, perhaps it did perpetrate the unspeakable.  And of course, during his torment the victim, not being able to see the creature, would conjure up all kinds of horrible apparitions in his imagination.  The creature was most likely a crystallization of the vague but very real discomfort one is apt to feel when alone in the wilderness, especially in a densely wooded place with all its unseen potential dangers.

Seeing this photo in my Facebook memories reminded me of an incident from my own life from years ago.  (Here beginneth a yarn) There was a period in my past when, for quite some time, I could not shake the feeling that I was being followed and watched everywhere by someone -- or some thing.  I finally got the bright idea -- way too obvious in hindsight -- to check out my shadow.  And sure enough, to my shock -- and simultaneous good fortune -- I was able to capture my own analogue of the Staybehind in this photograph.  And... it turned out to be a giant floating amoeba.  A giant floating freaking amoeba.  Yes, I did freak when I first saw it:  God only knows where it came from or when and how it glommed on to me, but you know what, the good thing is it also turns out that once you learn the identity of your stalker they lose their power over you, to my huge relief.  The amoeba accordingly removed itself from my life instanter, and I have not been bothered by it since.  Whaddayaknow!

This memory reminded me of "The Old Man of the Sea" episode from the tales of Sinbad the Sailor.  The unrelenting, unshakable closeness of the monstrous Old Man (who glommed onto Sinbad, literally, and could not be shaken off) certainly is redolent of the nature of the Staybehind.  And I was also reminded of another monstrous being featured in a movie I saw a few years ago, titled It Follows;  it was all about a mysterious, murderous supernatural creature which was invisible to everyone but its victims, but to its chosen victim it appeared in human guise -- usually of some grotesque or scary aspect -- as it followed him/her relentlessly, tirelessly, at a steady walking pace, until it finally caught up to them and killed them.  Then it proceeded to follow the last person the victim had had sex with, and so on all way back up the chain.  The movie was clearly low-budget, but it was well made and well acted.  And there was no attempt at all to explain away the monster, which was wise;  a clumsy, made-up origin story probably would only have sounded clunky and fake.

Monster Eyes In The Sidewalk

A winking monster, at that.

Not many people would have noticed it, but I did.

Because I'm always on the lookout for monsters, especially ones that are "hiding in plain sight", like this one.

Obake

Obake (おばけ, pronounced o-bah-kay, from "change") is a term in Japanese folklore (equivalent to bakemono, "thing that changes") that refers to a class of supernatural monsters that can take on shapes that are different from their original forms, most often for some sinister purpose.  They may be living creatures, or they may be inanimate objects that have somehow acquired an animistic soul.

Actually, there are similar traditions in other Eastern cultures as well -- I am reminded of the Tibetan tale about a lost fur hat that gradually acquired a quasi-life of its own through the psychic energy of someone obsessively thinking about it and eventually started moving around like some mysterious animal in the grass, scaring travelers;  and in Korea some say if a broom is left unused in a dank, dark place, it will absorb yin energy and eventually transform into a dokkaebi (a creature of mostly humanoid appearance, but in some versions of the folklore maybe has horns, a third eye, and other superhuman attributes), and of course there is the pan-oriental myth of the nine-tailed fox that can shapeshift into humans -- but of all these monster traditions the Japanese mythoi are truly impressive for the sheer number and variety of its monsters and their representation in art;  it seems that in Japan just about anything and everything is capable of transforming into a monster at some point -- lanterns, fans, rocks, eggs, umbrellas, you name it.  And trees.  Here is a palm tree, that I happened to catch in the process of just such a scary transmogrification.

It reminded me of another monster-tree that I photographed in the past.  Check out this post: "Another One Of Those Vaguely Sinister Images".  It really seems as if there is a whole other order of existence co-present with this world, inhabited by mysterious and unknowable beings and subject to its own rules, which only vaguely resemble ours.

Red Monster

The Sinchon neighborhood is home turf to the Red Monster.  Normally it pretends to be a piece of street sculpture and watches the pedestrians passing by, eagerly waiting for one to come close enough to be gobbled up.

One rainy afternoon I saw it eyeing this Umbrella Girl, probably trying to decide whether or not it was hungry enough to engulf her from behind and swallow her up right then.

I was in a rush and couldn't wait around to find out what ultimately transpired.  But the incident kept bothering me...

I went back the next day and looked directly up into the creature's maw (from a safe distance, of course), looking for any signs of Umbrella Girl's fate.  But unsurprisingly, there were none.

I still wonder what happened to Umbrella Girl.

The Crawfordsville Monster Returns

Bird in peril of being swallowed up by giant one-eyed sky creature!

[The Crawfordsville Monster was a weird flying creature that terrified the residents of Crawfordsville, Indiana, for two nights in late 19th century;  it was described as a large, amorphous entity with what looked like fins and one "fiery" eye, that hovered a few hundred  feet in the air over the town, writhing "as if in agony";  today, it is explained away in some circles as having been some unusual but natural phenomenon, perhaps a dense flock of killdeer (a kind of plover) that was confused by the presence of newly installed electric lighting;  maybe so, but come on -- surely the town's residents were well used to the sight of killdeer flocks; would they have been fooled into taking one to be a never-before-seen monster?  I don't think so!]

A Cyclops

HORRIFYING HUMOR

A giant whose one huge eye is also his all-devouring mouth, barring my way.  Laughing and staring me down with his eye-mouth.

And it's my own Shadow.

Another Glimpse Of Hell: An Amusing Bit Of Auto-Suggestion

PRONE TO NIGHTMARES?  DRINK BEER

One who is very dear to me gave me her ring.

It's not a particularly valuable ring.  It's one of those casual one-size-fits-all trinkets and was probably cheap, although she'd had it so long she couldn't even recall how she came to have it.  It is, however, quite attractive and I like it very much, so I've been wearing it continuously, only taking it off to take a shower.

In fact, it's become such a part of me that I feel a bit incomplete when I'm not wearing it.  Which probably accounts for the fact that I've gradually come to regard it as a kind of amulet, one that provides an invisible layer of protection around me as an 'emanation' of the loving closeness that exists between her and myself.  That's how my mind works^^.

Anyhow, last night as I was getting ready for bed I realized I was not wearing the ring.  I knew where it must be -- there is a designated place in the bathroom where it goes when I take it off to shower -- and I started to go to fetch it, but then a thought struck me.

I had been going to sleep wearing the ring every night, feeling secure and protected by the feel of the ring around my finger and knowing that no ghosts or closet-monsters could disturb my sleep while I wore it.  So what if I suddenly went to sleep without it one night -- would spooks be alerted to my sudden defenseless state and take advantage of it?  Would I be haunted by ghosts and monsters this night if I did not put the ring on?

Feeling rather mischievous and adventurous, I decided to try the experiment.  I got into bed without the ring and covered up securely right up to my chin (because, as everybody knows, closet monsters cannot touch your head or your blanket, so you're safe as long as you're covered up like a burrito with only your face peeking out -- it's a universal rule), hoping against hope that some kind of encounter would take place.

Well, as it turned out, my sleep actually was disturbed.  Not by a monster as such, but by a nightmare.  One that resembled a typical teenager-friendly horror movie^^.  In the dream I was walking down a corridor in what appeared to be a hospital, along with a couple of companions -- one male, one female.  It was painted all white, and starkly lit by livid flourescent lights on the ceiling.  We were going toward the parking lot exit that we knew was some distance ahead and down a right fork.  Even though there were no windows, I knew it was night outside, and fittingly, there were no other people as we walked on.  But then, we were joined by someone -- or rather, half of someone -- moving alongside us.  It was the upper half of a man -- head, arms and torso -- sliding alongside us on some kind of wheeled platform.  That was startling enough, but what made it extra disturbing was the fact that whatever device he was riding on was not working very well, and like a shopping cart with a defective wheel, he could not move straight ahead but kept veering into the path of my female companion and tangling with her legs.  We just walked on quickly, afraid to stop or speak to him.  But then a second character appeared that was even more disturbing:  this one may have been a custodian, because he was pushing what looked like a giant squeegee in front of him as he walked, sweeping up a quantity of crumb-like debris as he went.  The debris was pink and some of it was red and wet;  it turned out to be little bits and pieces of a human body, and all the pieces were still alive and moving.  An eye was among them.  The man handed the 'squeegee' to me and I had to take over as the sweeper.  We were now totally panicked and began to earnestly sprint toward the exit.  Along the way I saw a large clear plastic box crammed full with the human crumbs;  an eye inside it blinked at me.  As we ran toward the parking lot, where my car was waiting in the darkness (the image that flashed in my dream mind was that of my actual car in waking life, bless 'er), more scary creatures appeared and started to chase us, and among them may have been the lower half of the half-man on a platform, but these new characters were just vague extras in the background and I don't remember them clearly.  As we ran pell-mell toward the exit I awoke.  With a full bladder.  Was I glad I'd drunk a bottle of beer that evening!

So that's what happened with my experiment.  Doubtless it was the suspicion/expectation of something happening because I did not have the protection of the 'amulet' that caused the monsters that were expected to appear, appear.  In a dream, if not in waking life.  Actually, I can see where some of the elements of the dream came from.  The half-man bore a certain resemblance in both face and size to Peter Dinklage, the dwarf actor whose photo I had seen earlier that day in an online blurb about the new X-Men movie.  The hospital setting was probably inspired by the fact that on the day before this I'd been informed of a friend being hospitalized.  As for my car loyally accompanying me into the dream, surely it's due to the fact that it's just a few months old and I feel very secure and comfortable driving it.  The rest feels like a hodge-podge of any number of horror movies I've seen that have a claustrophobic feel and a body-horror theme -- Jacob's Ladder, Silent Hill, and Dead Girl, to mention just three.

Or it might be that my lack of protection did attract a spook after all... and that while I slept there was a spectral monster squatting over me like in the painting by Fuseli, making me have a bad dream.

Dream Monster

Many years ago, I had a dream in which I was trying to hide from this demonic creature.  It had a huge eye where its head should have been, and in its belly it had a huge mouth that opened directly into its stomach.

According to my therapist, everything in a dream is the dreamer in disguise -- which means the monster must have been me, too.  Its defining characteristics were seeing and eating.  Seeing+Eating.  SeeEat.  Or as the Mad Hatter said, "I eat what I see".  Seeing food and snatching it up -- the essence of the process of life.  Animals live by sensing and swallowing edibles in the environment. So, in that dream monster I saw myself reduced to the most fundamental terms.  Why was I hiding from it/myself?
