Yet Another Vanishing Building

INVISIBILITY PAINT!

Today it drizzled off and on all day long.  The City of Angels appeared gray, enveloped as it was in a light mist that blurred the boundary between land and sky and seemingly brought everything closer.  One had to exercise particular caution driving because... well, in sunny L.A., the moment raindrops dampen the pavement -- be they ever so precious few -- people seem to forget how to drive.  And thus it was that I was slowly making my way down Western Avenue through the heart of Koreatown, when I happened to notice this odd sight.

In old Warner Bros. cartoon shorts, 'vanishing cream' meant literally that -- you put it on, and you vanished.  Well, it looks like a product like that exists in real life.  Obviously someone had just started to give that building a coat of 'invisibility paint', then had to stop when it started to rain.

The Building Vanishes, Again

I have referred in the past to the building across from my office, that occasionally becomes more or less invisible.  A couple of days ago it happened again.  While not as big and spectacular as the also-sometimes-vanishing Scientology building in East Hollywood, I think it's impressive in its own right for being so close and immediate.  Sort of like the difference between a grand illusion performed on a stage and an intimate sleight-of-hand routine done on a tabletop in a club.  It's is at the intersection of the trees, in case you didn't see it.  Pretty impressive, no?

Another Vanishing Building

THE SECOND OF TWO FOLLOW-UPS TODAY (RE 10-23-2010)

Today I had to drive out to the Hollywood area to pick up a prescription. The trip turned out to be particularly interesting -- in quick succession I sighted: #1. another screwy cloud (previous post); and #2. another shy building (below), which seems to be merging into the sky.

Edit: Hmm -- I thought this building was part of the Church of Scientology, but it may be that it's actually a separate building, adjacent to it. I'll have to find out next time I'm in the area.

A Vanishing Building

Well, nearly. This is a building that's directly across from where I work, and I've noticed this natural camouflage at work time and again. I guess October is the wrong time of the year to really appreciate this phenomenon, because I have seen a much more pronounced version of this effect before, with the sun shining full on the wall -- and also the unevenness of the cloudy background here doesn't help, which is why I've cropped the photo down to the best area. Maybe I'll try again in the spring.
